Laos in April
Good time to visit
April is a reasonable time to visit Laos.
All Months
Cool season (November-March) offers the best weather – clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and minimal rain. December and January see the most tourists, especially in Luang Prabang where guesthouses fill up. Book accommodation ahead during these months.
Hot season (April-May) tests your tolerance. Temperatures hit 40°C (104°F) and the air gets thick and dusty. But crowds disappear and prices drop. April brings Lao New Year (Pi Mai) with massive water fights in every town.
Rainy season (June-October) transforms the landscape into lush green but makes rural roads impassable. Flash floods can strand you for days. The upside? Waterfalls reach full power and everything costs less.
For temple visits, early morning (6-8am) beats the heat and catches the soft light. Monks collect alms around 5:30am in Luang Prabang – respectful observation is welcome but keep your distance.
Full moon nights bring special energy to riverside towns. Don Det's bamboo bars stay open later and Vientiane's night markets extend hours.
