Mammoth Cave National Park in October
Great time to visit
October is one of the best months to visit Mammoth Cave National Park.
All Months
Cave temperature stays at 54 degrees year-round, so underground touring works any season. But surface conditions vary dramatically. Spring brings wildflowers and comfortable hiking weather, though expect rain. Redbud and dogwood trees bloom throughout April, painting the forest in pink and white.
Summer means crowds. July and August see the heaviest visitation, with cave tour tickets booking solid weeks in advance. Surface temperatures hit the 80s and 90s with high humidity - that 54-degree cave starts feeling pretty good. Afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually brief.
Fall offers the best overall experience. September through early November brings cooler surface temperatures, fewer crowds, and spectacular leaf color. The mixed hardwood forest puts on a show with maples, hickories, and tulip poplars turning yellow, orange, and red.
Winter touring has advantages: no crowds, easy parking, and tours run on schedule without weather delays. But many surface trails become muddy and less pleasant. The park stays open year-round, though some cave tours have reduced schedules.
Avoid major holiday weekends if possible. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day bring traffic jams on the park's narrow roads and impossible parking at popular trailheads.
