Mesa Verde National Park in April

Great time to visit

April is one of the best months to visit Mesa Verde National Park.

All Months

April through June and September through October offer the sweet spot for Mesa Verde. Spring brings wildflowers and mild temperatures, while fall delivers golden aspens and crisp air perfect for hiking. Summer crowds can be overwhelming — parking lots fill by 9 AM and tour groups clog the narrow cliff dwelling passages. But summer also means all facilities are open and you get the longest daylight hours for exploring. Winter visits have their own magic with snow-dusted ruins and almost no crowds, but Wetherill Mesa closes and weather can shut down tours unexpectedly. Early morning arrivals any time of year give you the best light for photography and smaller tour groups. The golden hour before sunset makes the sandstone cliffs glow, but most tours end by 4 PM, so plan accordingly.
