Namib Desert in September
Great time to visit
September is one of the best months to visit Namib Desert.
All Months
April through October offers the sweet spot for desert travel. Days are warm but not scorching, nights are cool but not freezing, and rainfall is minimal. May through September sees virtually no rain and crystal-clear skies perfect for stargazing and photography.
Winter (June through August) brings the most comfortable temperatures — highs around 20°C, lows near 5°C. But pack layers. Desert nights can be shockingly cold, especially in July when frost sometimes forms on the dunes. The upside? Perfect hiking weather and the clearest air you'll ever breathe.
Summer (December through March) is brutal. Temperatures hit 45°C regularly, and the occasional rain can flood normally dry riverbeds without warning. Some lodges close entirely. If you must visit in summer, stick to the coast where ocean breezes keep things bearable.
Here's what locals know: April and October offer the best compromise. Still warm enough for comfortable camping, but cool enough for midday hiking. Plus, you'll avoid both the winter crowds and summer heat. The light in October is particularly magical — softer than the harsh summer sun but still strong enough to make those red dunes glow.
