New Mexico in January
Good time to visit
January is a reasonable time to visit New Mexico.
All Months
April through May and September through November offer the sweet spot - warm days, cool nights, and fewer crowds. Spring brings wildflowers to the desert and perfect hiking weather. Fall means golden aspens in the mountains and harvest festivals statewide. Summer gets hot in lower elevations but stays pleasant in Santa Fe and Taos. Plus, summer brings thunderstorms that paint the sky in dramatic colors. Winter works if you stick to lower elevations and don't mind some snow in the mountains. Christmas in Santa Fe is magical with farolitos lining every roofline. But avoid July and August in places like Las Cruces and Roswell unless you enjoy 100-degree heat. The high country around Taos stays cooler year-round.
