Northern Indiana in May

Good time to visit

May is a reasonable time to visit Northern Indiana.

All Months

Summer is obvious but crowded. June through September gives you warm lake water and all attractions open, but expect weekend traffic and higher prices. Late May and early October are sweet spots — fewer crowds, lower accommodation rates, and the lake is still swimmable if you're tough. Fall colors peak in early October around Warren Dunes. Winter is brutal here. Lake effect snow can dump two feet overnight, and most lakefront businesses close November through March. Spring is muddy and unpredictable — you might get 70 degrees in April or snow in May. If you're coming for the beaches, stick to July and August when water temperatures hit the mid-60s.
