Okinawa Prefecture in May
Great time to visit
May is one of the best months to visit Okinawa Prefecture.
All Months
April and May offer the sweet spot — warm weather, low humidity, and minimal rainfall before the summer crowds arrive. Cherry blossoms bloom in January here, two months earlier than mainland Japan, making winter surprisingly pleasant.
October through December provides another excellent window. Typhoon season ends, humidity drops, and water temperatures stay warm enough for swimming through November. Hotel prices drop significantly after Golden Week in early May.
Summer (June through September) brings intense heat, humidity, and the occasional typhoon. But it's also when the islands feel most alive — festivals happen weekly, and the ocean reaches perfect swimming temperature. Just book accommodations early and budget for higher prices.
Winter (January through March) surprises visitors with mild temperatures and clear skies. You won't swim much, but hiking becomes pleasant, and whale watching season peaks in February and March when humpback whales migrate through Okinawan waters.
