May through September is the only viable window, with July and August offering the warmest weather and clearest roads. June brings wildflowers to the valley but also melting snow that can block access roads. September offers stable weather and fewer crowds, but nights get brutally cold. The lake freezes completely from December to April, making it inaccessible to tourists. Even in peak summer, temperatures range from 25°C during the day to below freezing at night. Weather changes fast here—pack layers and waterproof gear regardless of the forecast. Chang La pass frequently closes due to snow or landslides, sometimes stranding visitors for days.
