Patagonia in December

Great time to visit

December is one of the best months to visit Patagonia.

All Months

Summer runs November through March, and that's when Patagonia wakes up. December and January bring 18-hour days, wildflowers in Torres del Paine, and penguin colonies at Peninsula Valdés. But summer also means crowds on the W Trek and accommodation prices that double overnight. February and March offer the sweet spot — still warm, fewer tourists, and autumn colors in the beech forests. April through October is winter, when many estancias and mountain lodges close completely. The upside? Cheaper flights, empty trails, and southern lights if you're lucky. Spring (October-November) brings unpredictable weather but incredible wildlife activity. Whales arrive at Peninsula Valdés in June and stay through December. Here's the thing about Patagonian weather: it changes fast. You can start a hike in sunshine and end it in horizontal rain and 60-mph winds. Pack layers, always.
