Penang in March
Great time to visit
March is one of the best months to visit Penang.
All Months
December through March gives you Penang's sweet spot — less rain, slightly cooler temperatures, and festival season. Chinese New Year transforms Georgetown into a lantern-lit celebration, though accommodation prices double and crowds pack every street.
January and February deliver the most comfortable weather. Temperatures hover around 28°C instead of the usual 32°C, and afternoon thunderstorms stay brief. The northeast monsoon brings occasional showers but nothing that ruins outdoor plans.
March marks the beginning of hot season, but festivals like Thaipusam create incredible cultural experiences. The Hindu celebration sees devotees carrying elaborate kavadi through Georgetown's streets — intense and unforgettable.
Avoid April through June if heat bothers you. Temperatures climb above 35°C with crushing humidity. But this period offers the lowest hotel rates and emptier attractions. Early morning temple visits and late afternoon food tours become essential.
The southwest monsoon (May to October) brings unpredictable downpours. November usually delivers the worst weather with daily storms. But monsoon season has its charm — cooler evenings, dramatic skies, and locals gathering in covered markets during afternoon deluges.
