Raja Ampat in December

Great time to visit

December is one of the best months to visit Raja Ampat.

All Months

October through April delivers Raja Ampat's prime conditions — calm seas, clear skies, and 25-30 meter underwater visibility. The dry season peaks from December to March, when trade winds drop and seas flatten to glass-like surfaces. This is manta ray season at cleaning stations like Manta Sandy and Arborek Jetty. Water temperatures hold steady at 27-29°C year-round. May through September brings the west monsoon — stronger winds, choppy seas, and reduced visibility underwater. But this period offers advantages too: fewer crowds, lower prices, and spectacular storm photography opportunities. Rain comes in intense afternoon downpours that clear quickly. Diving remains possible year-round, though boat schedules become unpredictable during monsoon months. Book accommodations well ahead for December-February peak season. Shoulder months like October-November and March-April provide the sweet spot of good conditions with smaller crowds. Avoid June-August if you're prone to seasickness — the crossing from Sorong can be brutal in rough seas.
