Ribeira in February
Not the best time
February isn't ideal for Ribeira. Consider a different month.
All Months
May through June gives you Ribeira at its best. The weather's warm but not sweltering, the river sparkles, and the crowds haven't reached peak madness. Restaurant terraces open for the season, and you can actually get photos of those colorful houses without photobombing tourists.
September and October work beautifully too. The summer crowds thin out, but the weather stays mild enough for riverside dining. Plus, it's harvest season in the Douro Valley, so the wine bars pour fresh vintages.
Avoid July and August unless you enjoy human sardine impressions. The narrow streets turn into slow-moving rivers of tourists, restaurant prices spike, and finding a table anywhere requires military-level planning. December through February brings rain and wind that makes those cobblestones treacherous.
Here's a local secret: visit on weekday mornings in shoulder season. You'll have the medieval streets mostly to yourself, and the light hitting those colorful facades creates magic that no Instagram filter can match.
