Rift Valley in May

Not the best time

May isn't ideal for Rift Valley. Consider a different month.

All Months

The Rift Valley works year-round, but timing affects what you'll see. June through February offers the best overall conditions - dry weather, clear skies, and concentrated wildlife around water sources. Flamingo migrations follow unpredictable patterns tied to algae blooms and water levels. Lake Nakuru typically hosts the largest flocks from June to November, but they can disappear overnight if conditions change. Lake Bogoria, 30 minutes north of Nakuru, serves as a backup flamingo location when Nakuru disappoints. The Great Migration passes through the western Rift Valley from July to October, with massive herds crossing the Mara River. But this spectacle happens in the Maasai Mara, technically outside the main rift valley system. Still, many travelers combine rift valley lakes with Mara wildlife viewing. March through May brings heavy rains that turn roads to mud and reduce wildlife visibility. But this green season offers advantages: fewer crowds, lower prices, and spectacular wildflower blooms across the valley floor. Just pack rain gear and accept that some roads may be impassable. Altitude affects temperature more than season. Nights can drop to 50°F even during hot days, so pack layers. The equatorial sun is intense at 6,000+ feet elevation - sunscreen and hats are essential year-round.
