Salzkammergut in February

Not the best time

February isn't ideal for Salzkammergut. Consider a different month.

All Months

May through September offers the best weather and longest days, but each month brings different pleasures. May sees apple blossoms around the lakes and hiking trails free of snow, though some mountain huts stay closed until June. July and August bring warm swimming weather and every facility open, but also crowds that can make Hallstatt feel like a theme park. September might be perfect – warm days, cool nights, and autumn colors reflecting in still lakes. The tourist hordes thin out after Austrian schools restart, but weather stays pleasant through October. Winter transforms the region into a quieter place of frozen lakes and cozy Gasthäuser, though many lakeside hotels close from November to March. Here's insider timing: visit Hallstatt on a weekday morning in late September. You'll have the village mostly to yourself, the light is golden, and the Dachstein peaks wear their first snow caps. Book accommodation well ahead for summer, especially around Corpus Christi weekend when Austrians flood the region for the long weekend.
