Saxon Switzerland in April

Good time to visit

April is a reasonable time to visit Saxon Switzerland.

All Months

May through September offers the sweet spot for hiking weather. July and August bring crowds but also the longest daylight hours—sunset doesn't hit until after 9 PM. Spring wildflowers peak in late May, turning the forest floor into a carpet of color. September delivers perfect hiking weather with fewer tourists, though some mountain huts close after Labor Day weekend. Winter transforms the landscape but limits access. Snow makes rock formations even more dramatic, but many trails close due to ice. The Bastei Bridge stays open year-round, creating stunning winter photography opportunities. Avoid peak summer weekends if possible—the narrow trails to popular viewpoints turn into hiking traffic jams. Weekday visits in shoulder seasons give you the formations almost to yourself. Weather changes fast in the mountains. Pack layers even in summer, and waterproof gear is essential from October through April.
