Serengeti in September

Good time to visit

September is a reasonable time to visit Serengeti.

All Months

The Great Migration drives Serengeti timing, but each season offers distinct advantages that most visitors don't consider. December through February brings calving season to the Southern Plains — half a million wildebeest give birth within a three-week window, attracting every predator in the ecosystem. The grass stays short and green, making wildlife spotting easier, and lodge rates hit their lowest point. March through May marks the rainy season, when most tourists avoid the park. But this creates incredible opportunities: fewer crowds, dramatic storm skies, and lush landscapes that transform the golden savanna into emerald plains. June through August delivers peak migration season as herds move toward the Mara River. This means premium lodge rates, crowded game drives, and advance booking requirements. But you'll witness river crossings where thousands of wildebeest leap into crocodile-infested waters. September through November offers the sweet spot many overlook — herds return south, crowds thin out, and wildlife viewing remains excellent. The short rains in November green up the landscape without creating muddy road conditions. Here's the insider tip: avoid July and August unless river crossings are your absolute priority.
