Shan State in May
Good time to visit
May is a reasonable time to visit Shan State.
All Months
The cool season from November through March offers Shan State at its best. Temperatures hover around 70-75°F during the day, dropping to a pleasant 50°F at night. This is when the mist creates those ethereal morning scenes over Inle Lake and when trekking around Kalaw is most comfortable.
December and January are peak months. The weather is perfect, but you'll share popular spots with more tourists. Book accommodation in advance, especially around Inle Lake where the better guesthouses fill up.
November brings festival season. The Tazaungdaing Festival in Taunggyi features those spectacular fire balloons, while various ethnic groups celebrate harvest festivals throughout the month. The weather is still ideal, and you'll catch local culture at its most vibrant.
February and March see fewer crowds but maintain good weather. This is actually the best time for serious trekking, as paths are dry and villages are accessible. The landscape starts to brown as the dry season progresses, but mountain views remain spectacular.
Avoid the rainy season from June through October. Roads become impassable, trekking is miserable, and many guesthouses close. The monsoon hits the mountains hard, turning dirt roads into rivers of mud. Even Inle Lake, normally crystal clear, turns brown with runoff.
