Fall (September-November) provides comfortable temperatures and stunning autumn colors - October is particularly beautiful around Temple 45 in the mountains. Winter pilgrimage is possible but challenging, with snow in mountain areas and some temple lodgings closed. Summer heat and humidity make walking brutal, though early morning starts help. The traditional pilgrimage season runs March through November. Avoid Golden Week (late April-early May) and Obon (mid-August) when domestic tourism peaks. Weather changes quickly in mountain sections - pack layers regardless of season.
