South Central Kansas in May

Great time to visit

May is one of the best months to visit South Central Kansas.

All Months

April through May and September through October hit the sweet spot. Spring brings wildflowers carpeting the prairie - peak bloom usually happens in late April. The weather stays mild, perfect for hiking the Flint Hills or exploring outdoor museums without sweating through your shirt. Fall might be even better. September and October deliver comfortable temperatures, clear skies, and the prairie grasses turning golden. This is when the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve looks most dramatic, and small-town harvest festivals happen almost every weekend. Summer gets hot and humid, with temperatures regularly hitting the 90s. But if you can handle the heat, summer brings the most events - county fairs, outdoor concerts, and the massive Kansas State Fair in September. Plus, swimming holes and lakes provide relief from the temperature. Winter can be harsh, with ice storms and occasional blizzards. But if you're into aviation museums and indoor attractions, hotel rates drop significantly between November and March. Just keep flexible travel plans in case weather hits.
