Southeast Louisiana in December

Great time to visit

December is one of the best months to visit Southeast Louisiana.

All Months

October through April offers the sweet spot — temperatures in the 60s-70s, lower humidity, and festival season in full swing. Mardi Gras (February/March) brings chaos, crowds, and hotel rates that triple overnight. Jazz Fest in late April/early May showcases incredible music but expect 80-degree heat and afternoon thunderstorms. Summer here isn't just hot, it's oppressive — 95 degrees with 80% humidity that makes walking feel like swimming through soup. But summer also means fewer crowds, cheaper hotels, and the same great food without reservations. Hurricane season runs June through November, though most storms hit in August and September. December brings mild weather perfect for exploring, plus holiday festivities like the bonfires along the Mississippi River levees on Christmas Eve. Spring (March-May) offers the best weather but highest prices. Fall (October-November) gives you comfortable temperatures, reasonable hotel rates, and the beginning of festival season without the Mardi Gras madness.
