Southern Oregon in August
Great time to visit
August is one of the best months to visit Southern Oregon.
All Months
May through October gives you the best weather and access to everything. Summer temperatures hit the sweet spot — warm days in the 80s, cool nights perfect for sleeping.
July and August bring the crowds, especially to Crater Lake. The rim road doesn't fully open until late June most years due to snow. But summer also means the Shakespeare Festival is in full swing and all the hiking trails are accessible.
September might be the secret best time. The weather stays beautiful, crowds thin out after Labor Day, and harvest season brings special events at wineries throughout the Rogue Valley.
Winter transforms the region. Crater Lake becomes a snow-covered wonderland accessible only by snowshoe or cross-country skis. The coast stays relatively mild but expect rain and dramatic storm-watching opportunities. Many mountain roads close completely from November through April.
Spring arrives early in the valleys but late in the mountains. March brings blooming fruit trees in Medford while Crater Lake still sits under 15 feet of snow.
