Southern Rocky Mountains in October
Good time to visit
October is a reasonable time to visit Southern Rocky Mountains.
All Months
Summer (June-September) brings perfect hiking weather but also crowds and afternoon thunderstorms. July and August see daily highs in the 70s-80s at moderate elevations, but temperatures drop 3-5 degrees per 1,000 feet of elevation gain. That 80-degree day in Frisco becomes a 50-degree afternoon on top of Quandary Peak.
Thunderstorms build almost every afternoon in summer. Plan alpine starts — hit the trail by 6 AM and aim to be off peaks by noon. Lightning kills several people in Colorado mountains each year, and it's not worth the risk.
Winter (December-March) transforms the region into a powder paradise. Ski season runs from mid-November through April, sometimes into May at higher elevations. January and February deliver the coldest temperatures but also the best snow conditions. Expect highs around 20-30°F and lows well below zero.
Shoulder seasons offer the best deals and smallest crowds. September brings golden aspen leaves and stable weather — arguably the most beautiful time to visit. October can be gorgeous but unpredictable, with possible snowstorms above 10,000 feet.
May gets tricky. Lower elevation trails open up, but anything above 11,000 feet stays snow-covered. It's mud season in many areas, and some mountain passes remain closed. But hotel rates drop significantly, and you might score bluebird spring skiing.
Avoid Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends unless you enjoy traffic jams and packed trailheads. Presidents Day weekend in February brings ski area chaos — locals call it "Texas Week" for obvious reasons.
