Winter is harsh but magical – snow transforms the palaces into fairy tale settings. The Mariinsky Theatre's ballet season runs October through May. Just pack serious winter gear; temperatures drop to -10°C regularly. April and October are shoulder seasons with decent weather and reasonable prices, though some outdoor attractions close.
