Svaneti in December
Not the best time
December isn't ideal for Svaneti. Consider a different month.
All Months
Summer (June through September) offers the only reliable access to Svaneti's high villages and hiking trails. July and August bring the warmest weather and longest days, but also the biggest crowds — relative term in this remote region. June can be muddy from snowmelt, while September delivers crisp air and changing leaves without the summer heat. The hiking season peaks in July and August when high-altitude trails to glaciers and mountain passes become accessible. Snow can fall any month above 2,000 meters, so pack layers even in summer. Winter transforms Svaneti into a different world. The new ski resort near Mestia operates from December through March, but reaching Ushguli becomes nearly impossible due to snow-blocked roads. Some guesthouses close entirely, while others offer cozy refuge with wood-fired heating. Spring arrives late — May still brings snow to high villages, though lower elevations around Mestia begin to green up. Fall extends into October at lower elevations, but Ushguli can see snow by mid-September. Check road conditions before traveling, especially to Ushguli.
