Tongariro Alpine Crossing in October

Good time to visit

October is a reasonable time to visit Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

All Months

Summer is peak season for good reason. December through April offers the most stable weather, longest daylight hours, and safest conditions. But 'stable' is relative — I've been caught in snow squalls in February and blazing sun in the same day. December and January are busiest, with up to 1,500 people attempting the crossing daily on perfect weather days. Start early (7am shuttle) to beat the crowds and afternoon weather changes. February and March offer slightly fewer people with still-good conditions. April is underrated — fewer crowds, still decent weather, and stunning autumn colors in the lower forest sections. But be prepared for more unpredictable conditions and shorter days. Winter crossings (June-September) are for experienced alpine hikers only. Snow, ice, and severe weather make the track extremely dangerous. The shuttle services don't even run in winter. Here's the thing about Tongariro weather: it can change in minutes. I've seen blue skies turn to horizontal sleet in the time it takes to eat a sandwich. Always check the mountain weather forecast, not just the general area forecast. MetService provides specific alpine forecasts that are usually more accurate than generic weather apps.
