Upper Peninsula in November
Good time to visit
November is a reasonable time to visit Upper Peninsula.
All Months
Summer owns the UP calendar. July and August bring 70-degree days and water temperatures that won't instantly freeze your feet. But they also bring crowds to popular spots like Pictured Rocks and Tahquamenon Falls. Book accommodations months ahead for July visits.
September hits the sweet spot—fewer tourists, comfortable hiking weather, and the start of fall colors. The maples turn first, usually by mid-September, followed by the birches and aspens. Peak color typically happens around October 1st, though it varies by elevation and weather.
October extends the color season but brings unpredictable weather. You might get 65 degrees and sunshine, or you might get the first snow. Pack layers and check forecasts obsessively. Many seasonal businesses close after Columbus Day.
Winter transforms the UP into a different planet. Snowfall averages 200+ inches annually, and temperatures drop to -20°F regularly. But if you're into snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, or ice fishing, this becomes paradise. Just know that many roads become impassable, and some towns essentially hibernate until spring.
Avoid mud season in April and early May. The snow melts, but the ground stays frozen, creating swampy conditions that make hiking miserable and many back roads impassable.
