April through September gives you the full Utrecht experience. Spring brings King's Day chaos in late April — the entire city turns orange and drinks in the streets. It's madness, but good madness. Summer means terrace season along the canals, though July and August bring crowds of domestic tourists. September hits the sweet spot: warm enough for canal-side dining, cool enough that locals are back from vacation. Winter isn't miserable, but many canal terraces close, and the city loses half its charm when you can't sit waterside with a beer. Avoid the first two weeks of September when 50,000 students return — good luck finding accommodation or a quiet café.
