Valais in September
Good time to visit
September is a reasonable time to visit Valais.
All Months
Winter owns Valais, but the timing matters. December through February delivers the deepest snow and longest days on the slopes. January can be brutally cold — minus 20°C isn't unusual — but the skiing is pristine.
March and April offer the sweet spot: warmer weather, longer days, and spring skiing conditions. The Matterhorn glacier paradise stays open until late April, sometimes May.
Summer transforms the region completely. June through August brings hiking weather and festival season. The Verbier Festival in July-August draws classical music lovers from across Europe. But book accommodations early — summer availability is limited.
Here's what most guides won't tell you: late May and early June can be tricky. Snow lingers at altitude while valleys turn muddy. Many mountain restaurants and cable cars close for maintenance.
September and October deliver stunning fall colors and perfect hiking conditions. The grape harvest happens in October — perfect timing for wine tours. But weather can turn quickly, and many high-altitude activities shut down by mid-October.
