Vatican City in January

Good time to visit

January is a reasonable time to visit Vatican City.

All Months

April, May, September, and October offer the sweet spot - mild weather and slightly smaller crowds. But 'smaller' is relative when you're talking about one of the world's most visited sites. Wednesday mornings bring papal audiences, which means extra crowds around St. Peter's Square but a quieter Vatican Museums experience. Summer turns the Sistine Chapel into a human sauna - 30,000 people daily in a space designed for 700. Winter has the shortest queues but also the shortest daylight hours. The Vatican Museums close at 6pm most days, 4pm on Sundays. Here's an insider tip: the last Sunday of each month offers free admission to the Vatican Museums, but the queues stretch for miles. Christmas and Easter periods are beautiful but absolutely chaotic. Book everything months in advance during these times. Early morning visits (8am opening) give you the best chance at contemplative moments before the tour groups arrive.
