Virunga National Park in January
Great time to visit
January is one of the best months to visit Virunga National Park.
All Months
The dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer the best trekking conditions. Trails are less muddy, and gorillas are easier to spot when vegetation is thinner. But 'dry' is relative—you'll still encounter rain.
July and August are peak season with the clearest weather but also the most crowds. December through February sees fewer visitors and can offer more intimate gorilla encounters. The volcano is accessible year-round, but clear summit views are more likely during dry months.
Avoid March to May and October to November if possible. These are the heavy rainy seasons when trails become treacherous and some areas may be inaccessible. However, this is when the park is greenest and bird watching is at its best. Gorillas are active year-round—they don't hibernate or migrate.
