Volcanoes National Park in September
Great time to visit
September is one of the best months to visit Volcanoes National Park.
All Months
The dry seasons from June to September and December to February offer the best trekking conditions. Trails are less muddy, and you're more likely to spot gorillas in lower elevations where bamboo shoots are tender. But here's what tour operators won't tell you: the 'rainy' seasons can be incredible. March to May and October to November bring fewer crowds, lower accommodation prices, and lush green forests. Sure, you'll get wet, but gorillas are active year-round, and the forest is most beautiful when everything's green. Avoid peak holiday periods in July and December unless you enjoy crowds and inflated prices. Morning treks start early regardless of season — you'll be hiking by 8 AM to maximize gorilla viewing time before they become less active in the afternoon heat. The weather changes quickly at this altitude, so pack layers no matter when you visit.
