Voyageurs National Park in April

Good time to visit

April is a reasonable time to visit Voyageurs National Park.

All Months

May through September offers the classic Voyageurs experience, but each month brings something different. May means fewer bugs and ice-out fishing, but water temperatures still hover around 50 degrees. June and July deliver peak conditions – warm water, long days, and every campsite accessible. But this is also when families discover the park, so expect company at popular spots like Locator Lake. August brings the best weather but also the thickest mosquito swarms. September is magic if you can handle cooler nights. The bugs disappear, fall colors explode across the forest, and you'll have entire lakes to yourself. Winter transforms the park completely. Frozen lakes become highways for snowmobiles and cross-country skiers. The Rainy Lake Ice Road opens in January, offering a surreal drive across what was deep water months before. But winter camping here isn't for beginners – temperatures regularly drop below zero.
