Wachau Valley in December

Not the best time

December isn't ideal for Wachau Valley. Consider a different month.

All Months

April through June gives you the best of spring in the valley. Apricot trees bloom in white cascades during late April, while the vineyards turn bright green. Temperatures hit a comfortable 20°C by May, perfect for cycling or river cruises. This is peak romantic season. September and October bring harvest time and the year's most spectacular colors. The vine leaves turn golden and red while the air fills with the smell of fermenting grapes. Many wineries offer harvest experiences where you can pick grapes and taste the new wine. October weather stays mild – around 15-18°C – but pack layers for cooler mornings. Summer (July-August) sees the warmest weather but also the biggest crowds, especially on weekends when Vienna residents escape to the valley. River cruises book up fast, and restaurant terraces fill by 7pm. If you come in summer, book accommodations well ahead. Winter shuts down much of the tourism infrastructure. Many restaurants close, boat services stop, and the vineyards look bare. But if you want the valley to yourself and don't mind limited dining options, January through March offers rock-bottom hotel rates.
