Westfjords in January

Not the best time

January isn't ideal for Westfjords. Consider a different month.

All Months

May through September offers your best shot at decent weather and open roads. July and August bring the warmest temperatures - a balmy 12°C on good days - plus 20 hours of daylight for maximum exploration time. This is peak puffin season at Látrabjarg, when millions of birds crowd the cliffs like a feathered apartment complex. But expect crowds too, at least by Westfjords standards. June and September offer sweet spots: fewer visitors, still-accessible roads, and dramatic weather that changes every ten minutes. Winter transforms the region into something from a Nordic noir film - beautiful but brutally isolated. Many accommodations close, roads become impassable, and you'll need serious cold-weather gear. Spring arrives late here, with snow often lingering into May. Check road conditions obsessively at road.is before heading out, regardless of season.
