Westfjords in October

Good time to visit

October is a reasonable time to visit Westfjords.

All Months

Summer is the only realistic season for most travelers. June through August offers the warmest weather, longest days, and accessible roads. July hits the sweet spot with midnight sun and temperatures reaching 15°C on good days. But 'good days' are relative – pack layers and waterproofs regardless. The region gets 200+ rainy days annually. September can be beautiful but unpredictable, with early snow possible at higher elevations. Winter transforms the Westfjords into an Arctic wilderness. Roads become impassable, many businesses close, and darkness dominates. But if you're chasing northern lights and true isolation, January through March delivers both in abundance. Just book accommodation well ahead – options shrink dramatically. Spring arrives late and slowly. May still brings snow and mud, making it the least appealing month. The brief autumn in September and early October offers fewer crowds and dramatic light, but weather becomes increasingly unreliable.
