Whitsunday Islands in December

Not the best time

December isn't ideal for Whitsunday Islands. Consider a different month.

All Months

April through October is your sweet spot — dry season with consistent trade winds and comfortable temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius. This is peak sailing weather, when the winds are reliable but not overwhelming. July and August are the busiest months. Everyone knows this is perfect weather, so book accommodation well in advance and expect higher prices. The upside? You'll have consistent 15-20 knot winds for sailing and minimal chance of rain. April and May are underrated. The weather is still excellent, but the crowds thin out after Easter. Water temperatures are perfect for swimming, and you'll get better deals on accommodation. September and October mark the end of dry season. Still great weather, but you might catch some early season rain. The bonus? Humpback whales migrate through the area, so you might spot them from your boat. Avoid November through March unless you're comfortable with humidity, potential cyclones, and stinger season. Box jellyfish and irukandji are present in the water, making swimming risky without protective suits. Some operators shut down completely during cyclone season.
