Winelands in October

Great time to visit

October is one of the best months to visit Winelands.

All Months

March through May delivers the Winelands at their absolute best. Harvest season runs February through April, so you'll see grape pickers working the vineyards at dawn while temperatures stay comfortable for tastings. The autumn colors rival New England - those oak trees turn brilliant gold against green vines and purple mountains. September through November brings spring wildflowers and mild weather perfect for outdoor lunches. This is shoulder season, so accommodation costs less and restaurants take walk-ins more readily. The downside? Some estates close for maintenance after harvest. Summer (December-February) means crowds, heat, and higher prices, but also longer days and harvest festivities. If you visit in January, book accommodations months ahead - it's peak season for both international tourists and wealthy Capetonians escaping the city. Winter (June-August) sees rain and shorter days, but also dramatic cloud formations over the mountains and cozy fireplaces at wine estates. Many restaurants offer special winter menus featuring game meats and hearty stews. Just pack layers - morning temperatures drop to 5°C while afternoons warm to 18°C. Weekends stay busy year-round, especially in Franschhoek where restaurants book solid. Visit Tuesday through Thursday for a more relaxed experience and better service at tastings.
