York in February
Not the best time
February's saving grace is the Viking Festival - medieval York comes alive with reenactments and torch-lit processions. Otherwise, it's still properly winter with all the challenges that brings.
Weather
February stays cold but starts showing tiny signs of spring by month's end. Frost is still common in the mornings, and the River Ouse looks particularly moody under gray skies. The dampness continues, though rainfall becomes slightly less frequent.

All Months
April through September gives you the best shot at decent weather and long daylight hours. York in summer stays light until 9pm, perfect for evening walks along the city walls.
May and September hit the sweet spot — fewer crowds than peak summer but still warm enough for outdoor dining. The Minster gardens look spectacular in late spring, and September brings the Food & Drink Festival.
July and August bring families and tour groups. The Shambles gets properly rammed, and restaurant bookings become essential. But the weather's most reliable, and all the attractions run full programs.
Winter has its charm if you can handle the cold. The Christmas markets transform the city center, and you'll have the Minster practically to yourself. Just pack layers — York gets properly bitter when the wind whips across the Yorkshire Dales.
