Yunnan Province in September

Great time to visit

September is one of the best months to visit Yunnan Province.

All Months

Yunnan's size means different regions peak at different times, but March through May and September through November offer the best overall conditions. Spring brings blooming flowers - azaleas in the mountains, cherry blossoms around Dali, and endless fields of canola flowers that turn entire valleys yellow. Summer (June-August) works if you stick to higher elevations. Shangri-La and Lijiang stay comfortable while lower areas get hot and humid. This is monsoon season, so expect afternoon thunderstorms, but they usually clear quickly and leave everything green and fresh. Winter divides the province dramatically. Northern areas like Shangri-La can hit -10°C with snow, while Xishuangbanna in the south stays warm enough for shorts. December through February offers the clearest skies for mountain photography, just pack layers. Avoid Chinese holidays if possible - Golden Week (first week of October) and Spring Festival (January/February) bring massive crowds to popular spots like Lijiang. But shoulder seasons reward you with perfect weather and reasonable prices. April and November hit the sweet spot for most travelers.
