September might be the perfect month. Water temperatures peak around 24°C, crowds thin out after the first week, and you get those golden September light conditions photographers dream about.
October works for budget travelers who don't mind cooler water and some closed restaurants. Many hotels shut down after mid-October, but the ones that stay open offer serious discounts.
Winter is dead quiet — most tourism infrastructure closes November through March. But if you're into dramatic storm watching and having beaches to yourself, a few hotels in Zakynthos Town stay open.
