Zanskar Valley in July

Great time to visit

July is one of the best months to visit Zanskar Valley.

All Months

Zanskar operates on nature's schedule, not yours. The valley is completely cut off from November to May when snow blocks all passes. Your window is June to October, but each month offers different experiences. June brings road openings but unpredictable weather — passes can close without warning. July and August offer the warmest temperatures (20°C during day, 5°C at night) and the most reliable access. This is festival season too, with Karsha Gustor in July drawing pilgrims from across the region. September delivers perfect trekking weather with clear skies and stable temperatures, but nights get seriously cold. October marks the beginning of the end — stunning autumn colors but early snowfall can trap you. For the legendary Chadar Trek over frozen rivers, January and February are your only options. Temperatures plummet to -30°C, and you'll walk on ice for 6-8 days. Most guesthouses close by November, so accommodation becomes scarce. Plan for June-September unless you're specifically chasing winter adventures.
