- •Indoor activities like spice tours work better than beach days
All Months
June through September delivers Zanzibar's finest weather. Temperatures hover around 80°F, humidity drops, and trade winds keep things comfortable. This is also when kitesurfers flock to the east coast beaches.
December to February offers hot, sunny days perfect for beach lounging. Temperatures climb into the mid-80s, but ocean breezes provide relief. Hotel prices peak during this period, especially around holidays.
March to May brings the long rains. Daily downpours can last hours, many restaurants close, and some hotels shut down completely. But accommodation costs drop by half, and you'll have popular sites mostly to yourself.
October and November see short rains - brief afternoon showers that clear quickly. It's actually a sweet spot for visiting: fewer crowds, lower prices, and still plenty of sunshine.
Here's what most guides won't tell you: seaweed becomes a major issue on east coast beaches between March and July. The stuff washes up in thick mats, making swimming unpleasant. West and north coast beaches stay clearer.
Ramadan affects the experience significantly. Many restaurants close during daylight hours, and the evening iftar meals create a special atmosphere in Stone Town. Check dates before booking.
