Kansai in September

Good time to visit

September is a reasonable time to visit Kansai.

All Months

Spring and fall own Kansai, but each season brings its own rewards. Cherry blossom season (late March to early May) transforms the region into something magical, but also brings crowds that can make temple visits feel like cattle drives. Maruyama Park in Kyoto becomes one giant hanami party, while Yoshino's 30,000 cherry trees create a pink carpet across the mountainside. Fall colors peak in November, especially in Kyoto's temple gardens. Tofuku-ji temple offers the best maple viewing, but arrive by 8 AM to beat the tour groups. The weather stays comfortable through November - perfect for walking between temples. Summer tests your heat tolerance. July and August bring 35°C temperatures with humidity that makes everything stick to everything. But summer also brings festivals. Gion Matsuri runs all of July in Kyoto, while Osaka's Tenjin Matsuri in late July features boat processions and fireworks. Winter sees fewer crowds and lower prices, but many temple gardens lose their appeal without leaves or flowers. However, winter illuminations in December make up for bare trees. Kiyomizu-dera's winter light-up creates ethereal scenes. Here's the insider tip: late May and early June offer the sweet spot. Cherry blossoms are done, summer crowds haven't arrived, and the weather stays pleasant. Temple gardens show their green season beauty, and you can actually enjoy popular spots without fighting for photo angles.
