Lake Tahoe Region in May
Good time to visit
May is a reasonable time to visit Lake Tahoe Region.
All Months
Summer delivers Tahoe's peak season for good reason. July and August bring warm days (75-80°F), perfect for swimming, boating, and hiking. But expect crowds everywhere — Sand Harbor fills by 10 AM on weekends, and dinner reservations book weeks ahead. Hotel rates peak in July, with lakefront rooms running $400+ per night.
Winter transforms Tahoe into ski country. December through February offers the most reliable snow, with resorts like Heavenly and Palisades Tahoe receiving 300+ inches annually. Ski season typically runs November through April, depending on snowfall. Hotel rates stay high during holiday weeks but drop significantly in January and early February.
Shoulder seasons offer the best deals and fewer crowds. September brings warm days, cool nights, and stunning fall colors around the lake. The water stays warm enough for swimming through early October. June can be hit-or-miss — some years bring lingering snow at higher elevations, while others offer perfect hiking weather.
Skip late October and November unless you enjoy gray skies and unpredictable weather. Many seasonal businesses close, and you're too late for fall colors but too early for reliable snow. March and April work for skiing but expect slushy conditions by afternoon.
