Malaysia in January
Not the best time
January isn't ideal for Malaysia. Consider a different month.
All Months
Malaysia's weather is complicated because the country straddles two monsoon systems. March through September generally works best for most regions, but there's always somewhere getting rained on. The west coast (KL, Penang, Langkawi) sees heavy rain from September to November. East coast islands and beaches get hammered from November to February — many resorts close completely. But here's the thing: Malaysian rain is usually short and heavy, not all-day drizzle. You can still travel during shoulder seasons, just pack an umbrella. March to May offers the sweet spot — less rain, school holidays haven't started, and temperatures hover around 30°C. June to August brings school holidays and higher prices but generally good weather. Chinese New Year (January/February) sees domestic travel spike and prices jump. Hari Raya (dates vary) affects Muslim areas more than Chinese or Indian neighborhoods. Avoid major Malaysian holidays unless you book accommodation well ahead. The Cameron Highlands stay cool year-round — perfect for escaping lowland heat. East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) is drier from March to October, though brief afternoon showers happen anytime. Bottom line: there's no perfect time to visit everywhere in Malaysia simultaneously. Pick your priority destinations and plan around their weather patterns.
