Namib Desert in March
Good time to visit
March is a reasonable time to visit Namib Desert.
All Months
April through October is your sweet spot – Namibian autumn through spring. Daytime temperatures hover around 25-30°C instead of the brutal 45°C of summer. Nights are cool enough for comfortable camping, dropping to 5-10°C.
May and June are perfect. The rains have finished, so roads are in good condition. Wildlife concentrates around water sources, making game viewing easier. The light is magical – that golden hour seems to last all day.
July and August bring the crowds. It's Namibia's peak season, so book accommodation well ahead. Sossusvlei can feel like a traffic jam at sunrise, with dozens of vehicles converging on Dune 45.
September and October heat up but stay manageable. This is shoulder season – fewer tourists but still good weather. Hotel prices drop, and you'll have those epic sunrises mostly to yourself.
Avoid November through March unless you enjoy being slowly cooked. Summer temperatures regularly hit 45°C, and that's in the shade – if you can find any. The rains, when they come, can wash out roads and strand you for days.
