Northern Thailand in July

Not the best time

July isn't ideal for Northern Thailand. Consider a different month.

All Months

November through March gives you Northern Thailand at its absolute best. The rainy season ends in October, leaving everything green but not muddy. Temperatures drop from the brutal heat of April and May to comfortable highs around 28°C (82°F) during the day and cool 15°C (59°F) nights. December and January are peak season for good reason. Morning mist blankets the mountains, creating those postcard views everyone posts on Instagram. But expect crowds and higher prices — guesthouses that cost 400 baht in July jump to 800 baht in December. February hits the sweet spot. Weather stays perfect, but tourist numbers start dropping after Chinese New Year. This is prime time for trekking, temple visits, and motorcycle trips through the mountains. March brings the burning season. Farmers clear fields by setting fires, and the smoke can get thick enough to cancel flights. Air quality in Chiang Mai regularly hits "unhealthy" levels. If you're sensitive to smoke or have respiratory issues, avoid March entirely. April and May are brutally hot — temperatures regularly hit 40°C (104°F). The heat makes temple visits miserable and motorcycle riding dangerous. But accommodation prices drop to rock bottom, and you'll have popular spots mostly to yourself. The rainy season runs June through October. Don't let that scare you off completely. Rain usually comes in afternoon downpours that last an hour or two, then clear up. July and August see the heaviest rainfall, but September and October can be beautiful — fewer tourists, lush landscapes, and dramatically lower prices.
