October delivers perfect hiking weather with fall colors that rival New England. Summer gets brutally humid in Chengdu - locals joke that the city has two seasons: winter and construction. But it's also when pandas are most active, and high-altitude areas like Kangding provide cool relief. July and August bring crowds and higher prices. Winter works if you stick to Chengdu and surrounding lowlands. The city rarely freezes, and hotpot tastes even better when it's cold outside. Mountain areas close or become inaccessible due to snow. Chinese New Year (late January/early February) means everything shuts down for a week, but the celebrations are worth experiencing once.
