Tamil Nadu in September
Good time to visit
September is a reasonable time to visit Tamil Nadu.
All Months
Tamil Nadu's weather follows a simple rule: hot, hotter, and monsoon. The sweet spot runs from November through March when temperatures hover around 25-30°C (77-86°F) during the day. This is peak season, so expect higher hotel rates and crowded temples, especially around Diwali in November and Pongal in January. December and January offer the most comfortable weather — you can actually walk around temple complexes without melting. February starts getting warmer but remains manageable. The northeast monsoon hits from October to December, bringing heavy rains that can disrupt travel plans but also transform the landscape into something magical. Avoid April through June unless you enjoy feeling like you're inside an oven — temperatures regularly cross 40°C (104°F). The southwest monsoon from June to September brings some relief but also flooding in coastal areas. Festival seasons add another layer to timing. Navaratri in September/October sees incredible temple celebrations, but also massive crowds. Plan accordingly.
